About Pelita

Bringing a calm, considered hand to AI adoption

We believe small businesses deserve access to useful technology without having to navigate it alone — or at someone else's pace.

Our Story

How Pelita began

Pelita started from a straightforward observation: many small business owners in Malaysia were hearing a lot about artificial intelligence but had no clear idea of what any of it meant for their day-to-day operations. The tools being discussed were designed for larger teams with dedicated technology staff — not for the person managing a bakery, a printing shop, or a small logistics firm largely on their own.

The founders — a pair of former management consultants who had spent years working with both large corporations and small enterprises across the Klang Valley — wanted to address that gap. In 2022, they began offering informal advisory sessions to owners in their network, helping them identify which of their recurring tasks could realistically be supported by AI tools that already existed and were already affordable.

What started as informal conversations became a structured practice. Pelita was registered in Kuala Lumpur and has since worked with businesses in retail, food and beverage, professional services, and light manufacturing. The work has always been about listening carefully before suggesting anything.

Our Mission

What we set out to do

Pelita's mission is to make AI adoption accessible and unhurried for small businesses across Malaysia. We work on the understanding that technology should serve people, not the other way around — and that the most useful changes tend to come when they're introduced with care, not urgency.

We focus on three things. First, helping business owners form a clear, honest picture of where AI tools might be genuinely useful in their context. Second, supporting teams through the early stages of using new tools so the learning curve doesn't become a burden. Third, staying available over time for businesses that want steady, trusted guidance rather than a one-off consultation.

"We don't arrive with a set list of tools to sell. We arrive with questions — about your people, your processes, and what takes the most effort in an ordinary week."

— Pelita founding principle

How We Work

Standards we hold ourselves to

Our approach is shaped by practices we developed over years of consulting work — and refined through direct experience with Malaysian small businesses.

Client Confidentiality

All business information shared with us stays within Pelita. We do not reference clients in case studies or marketing without written consent, and we're comfortable signing NDAs.

Honest Scoping

We only take on work where we believe we can add genuine value. If AI tools aren't a good fit for your situation right now, we'll say so clearly rather than find reasons to proceed.

Written Deliverables

Every session results in a written record — a summary, reference notes, or documented steps. This ensures nothing depends on memory and your team can refer back at any time.

Staff-Inclusive Approach

We work directly with the people who will use new tools, not only with decision-makers. Change is more durable when the people affected understand the reasons behind it.

Tool-Neutral Advice

We have no commercial relationships with any AI tool vendors. Our recommendations are based on what fits your situation, not what earns us referral fees.

Ongoing Review

The AI landscape changes quickly. Retainer clients benefit from periodic check-ins where we review whether tools are still working well and whether any adjustments make sense.

Our Values

What shapes every engagement

Patience is the value we return to most often. Small business owners carry a great deal of responsibility and often have limited bandwidth for anything that feels like an additional project. When we take on a new client, we design the engagement around their actual capacity, not around an ideal timeline. This means sessions can be spread out, questions are always welcome between meetings, and there is no pressure to move faster than feels right.

Transparency sits alongside patience. Clients understand clearly what each service covers, what it costs, and what they can expect to walk away with. There are no hidden requirements, no upselling mid-engagement, and no vague claims about outcomes. We describe possibilities, not certainties — because working with a new technology always involves some degree of uncertainty, and pretending otherwise helps no one.

Respect for local context is something we take seriously. Malaysian small businesses operate in a specific environment: a workforce that often spans multiple languages, customer relationships built on personal trust, and business processes shaped by years of practical adaptation. We factor this in when assessing where AI tools might fit and how to introduce them in ways that strengthen rather than disrupt existing relationships.

Finally, we value restraint. Not every business needs AI right now, and not every task benefits from automation. Part of our role is helping clients distinguish between areas where a simple tool could genuinely save time and effort, and areas where the current way of working is already sensible and shouldn't be changed for the sake of it.
